Tutein

Seven tableaux for the stage

Pencil drawing of a reclining figure, cover image of Tutein

Tutein is dead and is being embalmed. His body is washed, opened, treated and prepared to endure. The stages of the process form the outward course of seven tableaux.

Yet Tutein speaks. He perceives what is happening to his body, sees the hands, hears the sounds, follows each movement. As the work proceeds, his thoughts drift away from what is taking place. Perceptions, memories and dreams merge. Images emerge, change, lose their coherence and lead into a reality that belongs to him alone.

The embalming gives the tableaux their sequence. What unfolds between its stages follows a different time, a different perception.

With sketches.
